The Group
The UMI Group “Modellistica Socio-Epidemiologica (MSE)” was born out of an initiative promoted by the Scientific Committee of the Italian Mathematical Union (UMI) for the creation of UMI Groups with an interdisciplinary character transversal to various areas of mathematics, to bring together members with common scientific interests or projects in areas of mathematical development in society.
The UMI-MSE group is dedicated to mathematical modelling in epidemiology and social sciences but is open to all those involved in population dynamics in a broader sense. This topic is of great importance and topicality, involving various aspects of mathematics and promoting the rigorous development of new models and reliable computational tools and their effective application in control strategies definition and decision-making support.
Group members’ expertise covers the more theoretical and descriptive aspects of developing and analysing mathematical models, as well as the more applied and strategic aspects of socio-epidemiology, providing forecasting and control tools based on data and comparison with experts from other disciplines.
Aim & Scope
The group aims to co-ordinate, represent and promote activities to support the definition of epidemic mitigation and control strategies, also thanks to the participation of mathematicians active in the field and not yet UMI members, collaborating with all those figures who in various fields use mathematical, statistical and computational methods in the socio-epidemiological field.
Tools
In addition to classical SIR-type models, based on ordinary differential equations, there will be room for models based on partial derivative equations, stochastic or integro-differential equations; for epidemic control techniques, with models oriented towards spatial confinement or contact tracing; for control, using open-loop techniques, Dynamic Programming, or robust control based on differential games.
